There is  http://www.ajaxsketch.com too, which is a vector application 
programmed in ajax. It relies on Firefox >=1.5, but it starts also with 
1.07, but does not work without native svg support in firefox, I guess.

Quite impressive what's possible with ajax. ajaxwrite works good with 
firefox 1.07 on linux.

I also think they use serverside apps like imagemagick, antiword, 
ghostscript and so on.
