Gamma is a way of disproportionately increasing the mid-range of color 
intensities -- the middle grey zone in greyscale, for example, though it 
applies to colors also. You can create a variable "hump" in the 
midrange. One could also de-emphasize the mid-range, but that turns out 
to be unlikely to be useful.
Brightness more or less shifts all the intensities one direction or the 
other, gamma just the mid-range.
