There's no need to repeat the mistakes of others.
No one cares about widows or orphans nowadays (and scribus still  
doesn't handle).

That sure is a problem I also often fight with. Most times I either  
increase the image
to fill up the whole column or most of the column or I decrease it's  
size to use only half the column. Putting in hyphens is important in  
the latter case.
Having a lot of space around an image is never bad. I didn't see many  
pages of your PDF, but try to put image always at the bottom or top  
of the page, it's easier to read and only seldom necessary to let an  
image float within the text.
