Hi Folks,
The Scribus team would like to announce the opening up of the public CVS for
Scribus 1.3.x, our development series to take us towards our 1.4 stable
release.
Some of the new or changed things so far:
-"True" facing pages support where objects may cross page boundaries (more
margin work to come here)
-Adjustable width/height scratch space around pages.
-Split document and application preferences (Edit/Preferences and
File/Document Setup)
-Undo/Redo
-Export/print preflight checker (handles things such as overflowing text
frames, transparencies with PDF 1.3 or Postscript target etc)
-Loadable shortcut sets for your previous favourite DTP app (none yet included
but the possiblity is there)
-Linked frame markers, with dynamic placement based on frame positioning.
-Centralisation of units conversion (reduces accuracy loss in conversions and
reduces units translations)
-Arrowheads on lines
-Image import support for CMYK-TIFF, CMYK-JPG and PSD (RGB/CYMK) (including
recent CMYK patches from David Purton)
-Separation of preferences from 1.2 to 1.3 - they can be run side by side
without affecting each other.
-Major code refactoring has happened in certain places and a lot more is to be
done in the future.
Not all of the above features are finished but they certainly are there (and
are not the only features planned for 1.3!) Please go easy on the bug
tracker. We know theres lots of things that are not done or are not finished,
and also that there are things from 1.2 that do not yet work or work well in
1.3.
The code is changing rapidly, a lot more so than in 1.2.2cvs. We do not think
you should use it for production work yet. It make catch your hair on fire.
It may fall into pieces, and you get to make modern art from them. However,
we want people to use it, play with it, break it etc. There are certain
functions from 1.2.x that do not work, eg the outline palette comes to mind.
Dependency requirements have not really changed for 1.3 so far, however we are
now stating we dont support Qt less than 3.3.3 due to the fact none of us run
it and because of the fixes in every Qt release. You will find Scribus 1.3
will build on older versions, but you are on your own there unless its a
regression in Qt code in 3.3.3+ that we must work around.
So, now what you have all been waiting for, the CVS instructions. Pretty much
the same as for 1.2, but in a new directory do this:
export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs at scribus.info:/cvs
cvs login (press enter when it asks for a password)
cvs -z3 co -r Version13x Scribus
Follow the same build process for Scribus 1.2:
cd Scribus
make -f Makefile.cvs
./configure (with any possible options you might require such as --prefix)
make
make install
The 1.3 roadmap will be online at wiki.scribus.net this week.
Enjoy!
Craig
