Not only that, it's also not a good idea to buy the cheapest printer
EVER - it'll cost you a lot more than a more expensive one over its
lifetime. I largely ignore the sticker price and work on estimated
consumable costs - it won't matter much whether the printer is $50 or
$500.

Like everything else in Linux, you do need to ensure the hardware is
compatible too. Unfortunate, but not something that'll be going away in
a great hurry. Manufacturers want stable driver ABIs and want to ship
binary-only drivers. Open Source developers generally want flexible
APIs, don't want to worry about an ABI, and aren't at *all* fond of
binary only drivers. Unless this is resolved somehow, I expect you'll
have to be careful about compatibilty for quite some time yet.
