Craig,
I didn't want to reopen this bug only to add this note, so I choose this
way to inform you that upgrading GS to 7.07 solved the problem. I've
just upgraded it to the Mandrake 9.2 package you indicated me to and
the "Display Transparency" checkbox in "Print preview" works fine now.

BTW, there were no problems whatever while installing Mandrake 9.2 GS
package on my Mdk 9.1:

[maciej at pingwin pub]$ gs -c "{ /pngalpha finddevice } stopped not == quit"
ESP Ghostscript 7.07 (2003-07-12)

true
[maciej at pingwin pub]$ gs -h | grep pngalpha
   pkmraw pksm pksmraw plan9bm png16 png16m png256 pngalpha pnggray pngmono

Thank you for your really great assistance
Maciej

Summary: Print Preview --> Display Transparency:
window becomes gray
Description:
Checking the new checkbox "Display Transparency" in Extras --> Print
Preview causes the preview to dissapear which means, the preview window
becomes gray and shows nothing else. The "normal" preview works fine.

I think the version of your ghostscript cannot handle the transparency
feature enabled in the new Print Preview option. The grey background is
normal due to the different device (pngalpha) used to produce the print
preview.

Let me confirm the level of ghostscript that supports this properly.

Try a:
gs -h | grep  pngalpha

and see if you get the device listed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Officially (having spoken to a ghostscript developer), gs 7.0.6 started
to
have basic support for the pngalpha device. 7.07 has full support.
Scribus
1.1.5 will have a 7.07 dependency (only for print preview mind you).

Add pngalpha device that uses RGBA, with the alpha channel
providing pixel coverage. Used for generating PNG images with a
transparent background.

gs -c "{ /pngalpha finddevice } stopped not == quit"

will return true if you have pngalpha, false otherwise.

#It seems to me, that I have to update my ghostscript. Thanks.

Ok. I thought that would be the result.

Are planning on upgrading your GS soon?

#Are planning on upgrading your GS soon?
Yes, if I find something appriopriate for my system. Otherwise, I'll
wait
for the next Mandrake version 10 and update my whole system then.

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/9.2/features/15.php3

indicates Mandrake 9.2 has ghostscript 7.07. Surely theres an updated
package for 9.1?.

Resolving this bug as its a GS issue. Dependency levels will be lifted,
or
at least noted for 1.1.5 release.
