The principle is to make sure the libraries can be found.

The best solution is not to edit /etc/ld.so.conf

If you made the new qt in /usr/local/

and the old qt was in /usr/share

Then   mv /usr/share/qt3 /usr/share/qt3.old
       ln -s /usr/local/qt /usr/share/qt3

That way you do not need to change ld.so.conf and all programs behave as normal.
