Take a look at the SANE project. They have shared library support for
MacOS X in the latest release (or perhaps in CVS, not quite sure).
"classic" MacOS I know nothing about, however.

The UNIX philosophy basically involves giving you enough rope to
hang yourself. And then a couple of feet more, just to be sure.
