Which video card are you using and what does /etc/X11/XF86Config have in
the bit beginning "Module". It should read something like

Section "Module"
  Load "dbe"
  Load "extmod"
  Load "fbdevhw"
  Load "glx"
  Load "record"
  Load "freetype"
  Load "type1"
  Load "dri"
  Load "GLcore"
