Alas, I accidentally deleted the screenshot of the error message, and do 
not have it.
I just now recreated the same directory and attempted to clone to it, 
but this time it
worked.  The difference before and now was that I upgraded my Tortoise 
GIT client.
The high watermark of the repository has not changed since yesterday, so 
my clone
was to the same version.  Therefore, it must have been the Tortoise GIT 
client that
was complicit.
