yes, nice roundup!
and this is how the epub plugin also works. each step is quite
simple... but there are some details where much care is needed :-)

yes, one of the goals of the current refactoring, is being able to
better interface to scripts...
i have to pick it up again before the lgm and finish the refactoring...
in the meantime, the epub branch is already there, works, and does most
things correctly.
but the latest additions from cezary (footnotes...) are still missing
and are not so easy to add (that's the main reason of the refactoring).
but the epub plugin will certainly be ready for the 1.6 release: no
questions!
